Mouthwatering Mumbai Street Food That's Actually Tourist Friendly
/If you’ve ever followed along on my Bombay adventures, you know I LIVE for Mumbai Street Food. It’s honestly my favorite cuisine in the country, possibly the world. One of the questions I get most is: How does your stomach handle street food in Mumbai? Luckily, I’ve gotten quite used to the food scene in Bombay — but on my most recent trip I was hosting a lot of friends from the U.S. who hadn’t been back to India in years. These are my tried and tested jaunts for tourists and NRI’s to eat Bombay Street Food.
1. Elco Pani Puri Center
Elco Pani Puri Center is Bombay’s most iconic pani puri stall, which has now turned into a full-fledged restaurant. Located in Bandra West, if you ask anyone where to find Mumbai’s best pani puri, there’s no way they don’t mention Elco. And yes, it’s really that good. But don’t stop at just the pani puri, Elco is known for all it’s specialty chaat. Eat pani puri downstairs at the stall, and then head upstairs to grab a table in the air conditioned area for the rest of your meal. My other favorites at Elco include: pav bhaji, dahi batata puri, chole bhature, ragda pattice, and bhel puri.

2. Swati Snacks
Swati is where Gujarati snacks meet Mumbai Street Food, and wow it does not disappoint. A favorite of Bollywood Celebs and Mumbai icons like Mukesh Ambani, it’s also where Madhuri Dixit and Tim Cook broke bread together over some vada pav. Swati Snacks has some of the best food I’ve had in the city, and it’s commitment to providing clean and hygienic food easily makes it one of my favorite places to eat. Must-eats at Swati Snacks include: panki chutney (with extra chutney), falafel (get it even if you’re not a fan of falafels), pav bhaji, satpadi roti, bajri khichu, dahi batata puri, and idli dabeli.

3. Sukh Sagar
Sukh Sagar is known for providing mouthwatering street food in Girgaon Chowpatty, Mumbai. Their Jain Masala Pav is my personal version of heaven, and yes the Jain version is actually much better! Sukh Sagar also has one of Mumbai’s best pav bhajis, and is known for their amazing idli chutney.

4. Sandwizzaa
You can’t go all the way to Bombay without trying an iconic Bombay sandwich. The Bombay sandwich is an amalgamation of all the different cultures that have shaped the city of Mumbai: from the Portugese who brought over bread and potatoes, to the Gujaratis who added crunchy sev. And each sandwichwaala offers their own spin on the iconic Mumbai street food. Sandwizzaa started out as the iconic Swastik Sandwich located in Santa Cruz, but now has outlets nearly everywhere across the city! Favorites here include the Maha veggie cheese sandwich, veg cheese grill sandwich, aloo toast, spinach corn toast, chilli cheese toast, paneer makhani burst grill, and the Mexican paneer grill. Ask for the house special red chutney that adds a kick to every bite!

5. Anand Dosa Stall
With over 60 different varieties of specialty dosas, Anand Dosa Stall in Santacruz West is by far my favorite place to get dosa in Mumbai. Located right across from Podar International School, directly outside of the snack store Avarya, Anand Dosa Stall is a must-try when you’re in Mumbai. They’re known most for their mysore masala dosa, but my favorite is the pizza dosa. A pizza dosa might sound a little out there at first, but just trust me on this one! Some other specialty favorties: Jinni Dosa, Maggi Cheese Dosa, and the Veg Kholapuri Dosa

6. Tibb’s Frankie
No trip to the Bombay is complete without tasting a frankie — the iconic rolls with flavorful filling that can be seen all over the streets of Mumbai. The founder of Tibb’s, Amarjit Singh Tibb, went to Beirut and decided to create a Desi version of the Lebanese pita roll, and that’s how we India got one of its most famous street snacks. Made with your choice of delicious fillings such as paneer, aloo, chicken and more, frankies are a great on-the-go snack for when you’re running errands or shopping!
